This is how Bachie couple Tim and Anna like to get sweaty.

Tim Robards may have shot to fame with The Bachelor, but you could argue this career accumulator’s most impressive work is his body.

When you see the chiropractor, model, fitness program entrepreneur and now ALDI collaborator (releasing the exclusive Fitness Special Buys Saturday June 17) in the flesh, he’s impossibly perfect.

There’s no denying Robards through his 7.2.1 system has this fitness thing down, which is why we quizzed him on all things sweaty – including his favourite way to workout with fiancé Anna Heinrich.

If you could only choose one piece of fitness equipment what would it be?

“For the general person or someone starting with fitness I would probably choose the resistance bands from the ALDI Special Buys. They can be used to work every body part, to build and tone muscle by varying resistance, for cardiovascular health by incorporating into HIIT style workouts and can travel anywhere with you. They would of course come second to my TRM rings.”

Do you use scales to measure progress?

“It really depends what your goals are. Scales would assume your goals are weight loss. My goals are more functional, like ‘can I do a deep squat’, ‘does my body feel good and energetic’, ‘do I have the mobility to do the things I love without injury’? I recommend getting a DEXA body composition scan rather than using scales. Rather than just tell you how much you weigh, it will tell you whether it’s muscle or fat and what your bone density is. A much better measurement to reflect whether your lifestyle is doing you good or harm.”

What ways do you measure progress?

“DEXA scans, and setting goals with time-based measurements. In The Robards Method we have a little exam each month in the App, which you need to pass to progress to the next level and unlock brand new workouts that are the next level up in challenge. You are always progressing and achieving.”

What body part are you always focusing on building?

“People are so infatuated with body parts and looking a certain way. I train for function and the way I feel. Having a healthy looking, balanced body is a bi-product of training for function. You feel good and look good. Right now, I’m focusing on my handstands, trying to get to a handstand push up.”

What training do you do with Anna?

“We will sometimes go train in the park together and do a TRM session on the bars and rings. We will also just try and keep active by choosing little active escapes on a weekend, or simply a game of tennis.”

You’re big on one healthy habit at a time, what would you recommend we start today?

“Aim for 10,000 steps a day. Measure on your iPhone or smart watch. Think about where you can add more ‘active hours’ to your life. This is anytime you’re not sitting on your butt. Sitting is the new smoking and we’re not built for it as much as we do. Can you stand on the train, have a walking meeting, stand while on the phone?”

You’ve said you sometimes do yoga and meditation. What kind?

“Vinyasa yoga generally, It’s a fairly energetic yoga where I feel I get a great workout and not just a stretch. It’s heated slightly and you get a good sweat up. I meditate at the end of a class, plus, I use the Headspace app for meditation or my own types of meditation.”

What’s your favourite fitness activity to do as a couple?

“My TRM workouts are easy for us both to be working out together outdoors. We might take down the ALDI kettle bells as well with some ALDI resistance bands. We also take the rings and bands on holidays as we travel a lot and they are awesome to pack in, the kettle bells might weigh your luggage down a little though!”

You’re big on alignment and mobility. How can we improve this?

“Stand more! A stand up desk is amazing and you can get affordable ones that go on your existing desk, or try the wall angle exercise which you can read about on my blog therobardsmethod.com/blog.
