If you’re anything like us, you’re kind of weirdly proud when your pee is clear, because you think – ‘yes, I’m hydrated.’
But drinking all the water also means peeing all the time and as it turns out, just like that first glass of rosé, you should actually be sipping not downing your H2O. (Seriously, there is a right and a wrong way to drink aqua, apparently.)
Why should we care? Since water makes up more than two-thirds of the weight of the human body, staying hydrated is important for a few reasons.
Water lubricates and cushions your joints, protects your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, and transports wastes from your body through perspiration, urination, and bowel movements.
Being hydrated helps with memory and cognition – it also helps to improve your mood and immune function. We’re pretty sure a bottle of H2O, could almost tuck you in and give you a kiss goodnight, too (jokes).
Back to the do’s and don’ts of hydration – according to Mel Magazine, you should never chug water, even though that’s pretty much impossible when you get a one minute hydration break in between circuits – or when you wake up the night after a super salty Mexican feast (including margaritas).
While glugging your water, is not a matter of life or death, it will make you pee more often – which means your body is actually getting rid of water, making you just as dehydrated as you already feel.
Instead, sip it, explains gastrointestinal, vascular and general surgeon Leonard Smith, who told Mel, “You should sip water slowly, two to three ounces at a time, throughout the day.”
In Australian metrics, that’s 60ml – which really isn’t a lot. To help you imagine it, a shot glass is 30ml.
So next time you’re making that gym bun sweaty (or just sitting at your desk), remember this fun drinking game: take two shots of water at a time to make sure you’re healthy and hydrated.
